End of April ramblings

I wish I had some great outstanding news, like they found a pill for what ails me and I'm cured and am able to go back to work and I found a job doing something with computers and I make a million dollars a year and all is right with the world.

But I don't.

As for my health, nothing has changed, in fact I continue my continued downward slide, though for now it seems to be a bit slower and I have had some good days. Without insurance, it's become impossible to follow any leads with any new specialists or anything. However, my primary care did give us a suggestion. (Did I mention this before? I don't know.) He said we should check with the University hospital in Albuquerque and see if I can get into the residency program there. I would be seen by just about every student doctor that would want to look at me and they'll do new MRIs and spinal taps and all that stuff. The catch is, I can't just show up, I have to jump through all the red tape hoops and do it on their schedule. I might be a year or more before something happens. If then. But at least it's better than doing nothing, which is all we can do right now.

We are in the last few weeks of the school year. Mr. D. just left today at noon for his band trip. They are driving as far as Flagstaff today, the rest of the way to LA tomorrow. The band does their thing on Saturday morning, the rest of the day they get to run amok at Six Flags, then they drive back Sunday and Monday. Some stupid rule from the bus driver union doesn't let them have a second driver to be able to drive straight through (unless they FLEW the driver to the relief point and FLEW the other back - and then did the same on the homeward trip - really amazingly stupid.) But, then again, a bus full of high school boys and girls - he'll have the time of his life. Especially when he has a crush on more than one of the girls in the percussion section.

Now we get to concentrate on graduation. We haven't even gotten the invitations done yet! We did finally confirm that we can use the church for the party. It's a little inconvenient for the few that are coming from Bloomfield, but since most of the local folks we are inviting live in Farmington anyway - and most in the neighborhood of the church - it works out better all the way around.

The college girls are almost done with the semester. Most of the finals are this week and next. In fact, I think they are doing some right now. I'm looking forward to the summer break. I think they'll both be way less stressed.

I'd really like some chocolate chip cookies.

Scary New Images from Lunar Probe!

This yet to be identified being is apparently very happy. Either that or she wants to eat us. The hoop-like object may be a weapon of some kind.

More Easter Cuteness

I think this is one of the few pictures where we actually got all the kids looking at the camera at the same time. Too bad the flash was being weird. The kids on the couch all look like they have ghost faces.

The latest masterpiece

Untitled, by Miss C

As I said before, it's kind of dark, but really good. I think it really shows her ability.

Mid-April stuff

So we're in the homestretch of the school year now. This is when things get totally insane, exponentially so this year because we have Mom in college AND we have a graduate this year.

We are like 40 days and counting away form graduation day. For some stupid reason, the school has graduation on Memorial day. I think that's selfish and disrespectful, but so far protests have fallen on deaf ears - and it's too late to change it this year anyway, so there it is. I can't believe how much work we have to do between now and then. We still have pictures to take, invitations to make up, a party location to finalize (we could have it at our house, but with no grass and no shade - probably not a good idea - we'll probably have it at our church. It's in the next town, but almost everyone we'd invite from this area lives near there anyway.)

The college students have finals over the next 2 weeks. Anna's at the top of her classes. I'm really proud of her, but it's been really stressful on all of us. We're going to have to plan better before the fall semester.

Between now and the end of the school year there is SOOOO much going on. Concerts, awards nights, field trips, prom. Oh, crud, prom is THIS Saturday!

In Andersen tradition (NOT started by their father), Miss C is going stag. She's come the conclusion that high school boys are stupid and not worth the trouble. I told her to wait until she meets college boys, especially at the University.

It's all but finalized that she will be going to NMSU this fall. They're giving her a scholarship (on top of the New Mexico Lottery scholarship). That, along with some other aid, gives her a full ride, including room and board and books for all four years. More if she carries a 4.0 her first year. Her major will be art, she'll probably minor in education. Her high school art teacher tells her not to worry about it. He's so impressed with her ability that he's pretty sure she'll make a living with her paintings. I wish I had a picture of her most recent work. It's kind of dark in it's theme, but it's amazingly good.

Mr D will probably finish the top of his class this year.....

Oh, I forgot to mention, Miss C and Mr D got laid off. Through no fault of their own and with much regret from the bosses, they had to cut the labor force and the last ones hired were the first to be let go. I honestly don't know what they were thinking when they hired them if they just intended to lay them off later, but that's what happened. Miss C and Mr D aren't dealing with it very well, but it's a life lesson. It's even more difficult when there aren't any other jobs for high schoolers around here.

Anyway. What else is there to report? Miss N will finish this semester after having to take one off. She's been really excited about her classes this time around, so hopefully that excitement will translate into performance.

We're still dealing with car issues. People have offered to help us, which is great, but it's hard to wait on their timing. It's a New Mexico thing, I guess. Everyone is just so laid back that it's like "oh, i'll help, when I get around to it". I wish we didn't have to depend on other so much, but such is the circumstances we find ourselves in right now. The promise is that we'll have two running vehicles soon, but I don't know how soon "soon" is.

That's about it for this time around. I'll post more pictures and stuff when I have them.

April 1 - No foolin'

Snow

It's snowing. Hard. Everyone tells
me it never snows here, but it's snowed a few times every year we've lived here. And it always seems to snow in late March and April. This year we got a lot, so hopefully it's a sign that the drought is mellowing.

Doctor

I just got back from a regular follow-up with my doctor. Nothing new to report, but we have to do these follow-ups to keep the ball rolling on disability. He really wants me to go to the Mayo Clinic, but without insurance, it can't happen. I would cost more thousands than we've ever had ever.

He did suggest I contact the University Hospital. At least that would be something and since it's a teaching hospital it would cost us little or nothing. I don't know. I mean, I've seen a lot of specialists with no results. But at least we'd be doing something.

Life

Things are extremely stressful right now. Miss C and Mr D didn't take into consideration the comings and goings of the rest of the family when they submitted their availability for their new job. As a result we've had to do some insane juggling that we can't possibly keep up for the next 9 weeks until school is out.

We're still trying to figure out how to get the various vehicles fixed. It's not a matter of money, we have that, at least at the moment. The issue is we have too many people wanting to "help" us do it cheaply, and as a result everything is tied up in their hands The problem there is that it means we have to wait for them to do it on their time. While we desperately need them fixed now, their thinking is "well, they've done without this long, I'll git 'round tuit." So we call and ask and "not yet" and we call and ask and "not yet" and on and on.

Here's a picture of Mr. L from last week trying to tell us how old he is now:
